Church Statement of Significance: One of Melbourne's earliest bluestone churches, of which the four bay nave of 1850-1 was designed by Newson & Blackburn. Other work, since largely reversed, was by Charles Webb in 1855-6, and Nathaniel Billing was responsible for the north aisle of 1863-4 and the south aisle and chancel between 1868 and 1876. Believed taken to Tasmania from Scotland as part of the cargo of the 'Thistle' and later brought from Launceston to Portland, again by the 'Thistle'. On 6 December 1834 it was used to turn the first sod in Victoria in the vicinity of Bentinck Street, between Julia and Henty Streets. On display, History House, Portland. The pipe organ built in 1958-59 by Stephen Laurie was the first new instrument that he built. Trained in England with the noted firm of John Compton, Steve Laurie went on to build or rebuild a large number of instruments in five Australian states. One of the best churches by the prolific architect Louis Williams designed in his version of the Arts and Crafts style and built in 1926-7, with a vestry added in 1929. Church A bluestone church in a severe Early English style, begun in 1855 and consecrated in 1868, designed by George Hawer Hathewson, with the later addition of chapel, organ chamber and narthex.
