Statement of Significance

What is significant? The pipe organ built in 1958-59 by Stephen Laurie was the first new instrument that he built. Trained in England with the noted firm of John Compton, Steve Laurie went on to build or rebuild a large number of instruments in five Australian states. The Euroa organ was built upon the extension principle and the earliest example by its builder of a genre that became popular in the 1960s.
How is it significant? The organ is significant for historic, aesthetic and technical reasons at a local level
Why is it significant? The pipe organ at St Paul's Anglican Church, Euroa is significant for the following reasons:
It is the first new organ that Steve Laurie built in Australia under his own name;
The instrument remains completely unaltered;
Built upon the extension principle, where a small number of ranks (five in this instance) are unified to provide a large number of stops;
The instrument has a bold tonal quality with a fine Trumpet stop;
The instrument exhibits fine and durable workmanship.
