Statement of Significance

Believed taken to Tasmania from Scotland as part of the cargo of the 'Thistle' and later brought from Launceston to Portland, again by the 'Thistle'. On 6 December 1834 it was used to turn the first sod in Victoria in the vicinity of Bentinck Street, between Julia and Henty Streets. On display, History House, Portland.
