Statement of Significance

Church
A bluestone church in a severe Early English style, begun in 1855 and consecrated in 1868, designed by George Hawer Hathewson, with the later addition of chapel, organ chamber and narthex. The chapel has a most unusual plate tracery rose window. The interior is notable for its wealth of fittings, painted scriptural texts, and intact Fincham pipe organ of 1882. George Fincham Organ
A two-manual organ of 13 stops built in 1882 by George Fincham and incorporating several ranks of Bevington pipework from the previous organ which had originally been placed in St James' Cathedral, Melbourne. The instrument, which remains essentially unaltered, retains its original tonal scheme, pipework, mechanical action, and double cases containing diapered pipes, one facing across the chancel, and the other down the nave. The placement of the organ is additionally notable, within a chamber whose domed ceiling is decorated with moon and stars on a sky blue background.
