Courcelle Organ - Uniting Church

One of the seven known organs exported to Victoria in the 1860s by London organbuilder John Courcelle, this single-manual instrument of five stops is thought to have been placed in the Wesleyan Church, Fitzroy Street, St Kilda before its installation at Kensington, possibly in the 1920's. The instrument is intact, apart from the introduction of electric blowing, and retains its gabled Gothic case of three flats, oak console fittings and bold voicing. Classified: 04/05/1989

Members of the Church of England met at South Melbourne, then known as Emerald Hill, as early as 1854 and a reserve at the corner of Dorcas and Clarendon Streets was set aside for this church in the original township plan of 1852. A single-manual chamber organ of six stops built in the 1860's by the London organbuilder John Courcelle and one of the seven pipe organs which he is known to have sent to Victoria at the time. Its earliest known location is thought to have been the private chapel of "Rose Hill", Toorak, the property of William Philpott, and it was later placed in "Noorilim", Murchison, the property of Willilam Irving Winter-Irving. The Dennys, Lascelles Woolstores were erected at various times and comprise a complex of buildings.
