AHC Statement of Significance The former Bank of New South Wales, High Street, was erected in 1877 when Echuca was a bustling river port. The architects were Reed and Barnes. Victoria's oldest surviving bank building, designed in 1847 by Charles Laing, the leading architect prior to Separation, and the progenitor of a tradition of bank design extending through his own practice to those of Leonard Terry, Lloyd Tayler and others. The Bank of New South Wales, 149-151 Barker Street, Castlemaine, was constructed to the design of architect Leonard Terry in 1866 to replace an earlier (1855) building on the site.
