Victoria's oldest surviving bank building, designed in 1847 by Charles Laing, the leading architect prior to Separation, and the progenitor of a tradition of bank design extending through his own practice to those of Leonard Terry, Lloyd Tayler and others. It has been stripped of its portico and cornice, and built out at ground floor level, but the facade still exhibits Laing's subtle neoclassical massing with the centre recessed between two shallow projecting panels.
