In August 1850, James Heffernan purchased the land at the corner of King and Latrobe Streets and it appears that he erected the present shop and dwelling soon afterwards. The two storey brick structure then comprised four rooms plus outbuildings, the upper floor of the rear wing was added c. 1880. The building has a simple gabled form with rendered street facades. Designed by Blackett and Rankin Architects in 1900, the simple form, segmented bow window and low pitched roof hint at the California Bungalow style that became an interest of W A M Blackett. The Lofts was designed for Dr Sidney Plowman who came to Australia in 1890 to be director of the Melbourne Pharmacy School.
