The Beechworth Police Station was erected in 1857 to designs of the Public Works Department and origianlly served as a Sub-Treasury and Gold Office. Additions were made to the rear in 1861. The single storey stone structure originally comprised a pair of offices in the principal gable roof section. A two storey brick building was designed by William Steel and George Watson, both architects in the Public Works Department, and erected in 1878 by William Smith. The main entrance door and the windows have contrasting coloured brick arches over the round-headed windows and contribute to the well-proportioned symmetrical front elevation.
