Statement of Significance

A two storey brick building was designed by William Steel and George Watson, both architects in the Public Works Department, and erected in 1878 by William Smith. The main entrance door and the windows have contrasting coloured brick arches over the round-headed windows and contribute to the well-proportioned symmetrical front elevation.
The Bridge Road, Richmond police station was also built in 1878 with a similar front elevation but with a different internal layout. A further free-standing two-storey brick building was erected at the rear in 1890 by John Dow in the same style with similar architectural detailing and with a single-storey bluestone block of six cells attached at the rear. There are a few minor internal alterations but apart from alterations to some doors and windows at the rear, the buildings are as originally designed.
The timber entrance porch and store to the rear building is not included.
