An imposing but unusual design using coloured brick-work to define separate highly individual elements of the facade. The building is the only known work of the architect C Ohlfsen Bagge, and dates from 1867. At that date it represents an early use of coloured brick-work in Victoria. The Ballarat Fire Brigade Tower, designed by prominent local architect Henry Caselli, was constructed in 1864 by William Cowland, builder and brigade volunteer.
