A large polychromatic brick building designed by H R Bastow, Chief Architect, Education Department of Victoria and built in 1877-78. The design is similar to the Williamstown School No 1183 although that building was erected in Basalt. The bell and spire have been removed, the roof has been tiled and the large windows have been altered.The additions at the rear are not included. Classified: 11/12/1975

The present building constructed in 1888 to the design of Twentyman and Askew Architects replaced a small hotel wthich had occupied the site since 1855. The building is very narrow for its height and is of restrained plaster decoration for its date of construction. It forms an important "gateway" effect to Little Bourke Street with Latham House on the opposite corner. Classified: 06/06/1994

An imposing but unusual design using coloured brick-work to define separate highly individual elements of the facade. The building is the only known work of the architect C Ohlfsen Bagge, and dates from 1867. At that date it represents an early use of coloured brick-work in Victoria. The Ballarat Fire Brigade Tower, designed by prominent local architect Henry Caselli, was constructed in 1864 by William Cowland, builder and brigade volunteer.
