Built for G W Hall, in 1900-01, to the design of William Salway, this building is notable for the individual character of its free Romanesque revival upperfacade and its contribution to a similarly inspired streetscape. Che On
11-13 Heffernan Lane,, MELBOURNE VIC 3000 - Property No B6579 |
The building was erected as the Wing Ching Restaurant in 1891. It appears that the upper floors were used for warehouse space with the gantry protruding from the top floor doorway. The cafe was known as the Quon Che On from 1900 to 1915 and since then until recently was known as the Chung Wah. This cafe was probably the first frequented by Westerners in Chinatown in the 1920's. Syracuse Wine Bar & Restaurant
435-445 Little Collins Street,, MELBOURNE VIC 3000 - Property No B4514 |
Built in 1890-01, Stalbridge Chambers is externally perhaps the best of the many richly decorated, similarly styled, Boom-era designs from the architects, Twentyman & Askew. As the product of an owner builder (R C Brown) the building epitomises the speculative nature of the time and, with its combination of hotel, shops and offices, offers an early example of multi-use development. Stalbridge Chambers also has an important role at the entry point to the significant Bank Place ... more |
