The Kilnoorat Cemetery began life as the Wooriwyrite homestead cemetery, with the first burial of Duncan McLaurin Oliphant in 1851. It was the earliest cemetery in the district and it served as a burial ground for labourers and their families in the area. The Mount Noorat homestead was established in 1868 by pioneer Scottish-born settler Niel Black, following division of the historic Glenormiston run between original pastoral company partners Black, A S Finlay and T S Gladstone.
