Tips on searching
- The more fields that are entered, the more specific the results will be
- The fewer fields that are entered, the greater the number of results
- Multiple results are returned in no particular order
- Name will search all names recorded, such as original and current. They must be spelled correctly, but searches will ignore apostrophes or full stops. It will also search for all entries with that word in the title including as part of a word, eg. ‘Mary’ will find ‘St Marys’, Maryborough Weighbridge’, and all Primary Schools
- Name for Trees will search both botanical name (the principal name used for filing) and common name
- Keywords will search all text in the Statements of Significance’, but not ‘Name’. Keywords is useful to search for designers or features or styles
- File Number is useful if you know the exact File Number, which must start with a B, G, T, or L prefix
- Location will use the word/s entered and search all street names, localities (eg suburb) and municipalities with that word/s
- Municipality choose the appropriate municipality or shire if known. Every place has been assigned at least one municipality
- Item Group / Item Category. Item Group provides general place types, and Item Category more detailed types within that group. Each place is assigned only one of each. Multiple searches using a variety of possible groups / categories is recommended
- File Type is the four administrative categories used by the National Trust Database: Building (B numbers), Garden (G numbers), Landscape (L numbers), Tree (T numbers). This will limit the search to the category of place chosen
- Level is the level at which the place is classified, and two other categories:
- Classified places can be International, National, State, Regional, or Local
- Demolished is used for places that have been demolished or largely destroyed / altered since the file was created
- File Only is for places on which the Trust has a file, but has not been classified, or files kept on issues or types of places that are for information purposes eg. ‘Carlton Verandahs’
- The Statements of Significance in the National Trust Database include many that have not been updated since they were first created, and so may be incomplete or out of date. Some have been adopted from other organisations' citations, which is usually noted
- The National Trust Database is stored as part of the Victorian Heritage Database, a service provided by the State Government body Heritage Victoria, and is scheduled for daily maintenance at 03.00am EST - Eastern Standard Time. Recent additions to the database may not appear during this time
