Statement of Significance

The shops in Glen Eira Road and Glen Eira Avenue are of local historical and architectural significnce as an essentially intact and representative example of a commercial buiding designed in an Edwardian "Free" style. The shops were the first commercial buildings in the small Glen Eira Road shopping centre. As such, they set the architectural theme for subsequent buildings - red brick and render, with distinctive parapet detail. The shops are of interest for their association with Dunlop and Hunt, who were prolific builders and designers of bungalows in Melbourne. The shops are a critical streetscape element. The corner turret of the building also makes it a distinctive local landmark.
