Statement of Significance

The site of Ramorinie was originally part of Fenwick's Lot 87 and passed to George Turner in 1856. He bought a small timber house on the site. James Maitland Campbell a Scottish solicitor, practising in Melbourne was looking for a site to build a permanent home and bought Turner's cottage and land. He considerably enlarged the original house and renamed it Ramornie. In 1890, during his first term as Mayor of Kew,he built a second and larger house with towers. Having sold the first house, he renamed this second house Ramornie. During the depression years ofthe 1890's, the family was forced to let out the house and move elsewhere, but later returned.
