Statement of Significance

The Carlton Brewery has developed steadily since its establishment in 1864. The oldest building dates from this time and consists of a two storey bluestone warehouse in Bouverie Street. It is flanked by the old malthouse (1883, altered 1955) and the offices erected in stages from 1890 to 1927 (architects S Smith and Ogg). Other interesting survivors include the stables facade (1870), No 1 Tower (1878, now greatly altered), and Swanston Street facade (1904).
A brewery has occupied this site since 1858 when the North Melbourne Brewery was established in Bouverie Street. Of the early surviving buildings, the most important group is the row of bluestone warehouses and offices facing Bouverie Street. They reflect the traditions which the brewery still maintains and are notable examples of their type. The distinctive entrance and cast iron hitching posts are important features.
Other parts of the brewery have interesting landmark and townscape qualities.
The bluestone buildings have been substantially altered by the installation of wide openings for trucks, but these alterations have been essential for the workings of the brewery. The cemented cornice to the additional floor of the early 1864 warehouse is unfortunate.
