Statement of Significance

The former Ducker's auction rooms were built in 1877 to a design by Alexander Davidson and company for WF Ducker, auctioneer

1. The building is historically important as a substantially intact and elaborate example of nineteenth century purpose-built auction rooms.

2. The building's original function is clearly demonstrated in the layout of the main auction room, offices and entry lobby.

3. Its design and decorative features illustrate the creative accomplishment of Alexander Davidson who, in partnership with George Henderson, was influential in the development of architectural traditions in Geelong and the western district of Victoria.

4. The exterior features decorative elements derived from the work Vollet-le-Duc, a prominent nineteenth century architectural theoretician.

5. The building represents continuity of function as an auction room and commercial premises over more than 100 years.
