Protestant Hall (Former) - Physical Description 1
The Protestant Hall, Loyal Orange Lodge, probably designed by G.W. Clegg, is a restrained Baroque composition with 'a relatively wide central section intersecting the main body of the facade. In the slightly projecting central panel, the arched entrance is flanked by double Tuscan pilasters supporting a dominant but elegant segmental pediment. Two other Tuscan pilasters are at the corners of the building. Between the projecting central panel and the corner pilasters are windows with margins in etched ruby and blue glass, all more or less intact.
Above the pediment there is a panel or name plate motif between two wide attached pedestals of the same height as the panel. Two slimmer pedestals at the corners of the facade are freestanding and in fact the one on the south side is a chimney.
This building is of extremely unusual composition. The crisp deliberate detailing and superimposition of Baroque elements over a standard facade produce a building possibly unique to the State of Victoria. The building is substantially intact, and in good condition. It was not possible to gain access to the interior. It forms an important streetscape element in an important precinct.Protestant Hall (Former) - Integrity
