Sovereign Mine is of local significance as an early surviving example of mining activity in this remote location close to the Yarra Track, the route to the Jordan goldfields.

The Sovereign Mine is located within the Cumberland Scenic Reserve. Several shafts, a hut, cyanide slurry tanks and other relics remain along with a long water race built to supply water to the mine. Today the walking track from the Cumberland Falls to Sovereign Views follows the course of this race. The exact tunnel locations remain unconfirmed. (Supple 1991; Munro, 1992)
