Show Place Maps and StreetviewStatement of Significance
Montrose Cottage, although relocated in the 1980s to a new site and with
a new roof and verandah, has local significance as a remaining 1870s
selector's cottage with important associations with the early settler
Robert Riddett, who selected land in 1877 and built a house, stable and
storehouse on his Montrose property.
Description
Montrose Cottage has been moved to this site as a way of ensuring its survival (see history). The cottage is a simple rectangular building with a gabled roof and a verandah on three sides. A number of its features appear to have been reconstructed following its removal, including the present verandah. The chimney has been rebuilt. It is not clear how much of the original fabric remains. The original building is described as being built of sawn timber by Robert Riddell, a plasterer (see history). The present building has an rendered external finish, perhaps retaining or replicated the original. The floor of the verandah is paved in specially made bricks with names inscribed.
