Statement of Significance

What is significant?

Mernda Heights house and garden at 10 Old (Coonara) Road, Olinda.

How is it significant?

Mernda Heights is of local historical and aesthetic significance.

Why is it significant?

Of historical significance as the holiday home of Frederick Coles, of

the Coles stores family.

Of aesthetic significance because of the extensive gardens laid out from

the mid-1930s. Also due to its connections with the architectural firm

of Harry Norris, if this link can be documented.

Description

A single-storey weatherboard house with a hipped terracotta tiled roof. It is built on an obtuse-angled plan form and has two rendered chimneys of solid proportions framing the main entrance. It is otherwise architecturally unremarkable.

A verandah has been enclosed and widow openings altered. The house is set in a large, attractively landscaped garden planted with a variety of native and exotic species.
