A garden designed by the famous landscape architect, the late Miss Edna
Walling, and constructed by the famous landscape gardener, the late Mr.
Ellis Stones - is an excellent example of their work. (Tansley, 1978)
Folly Farm is important as an example of the style of the renowned
garden designer, Edna Walling, exhibiting the following characteristics
of her style: a natural planting style with mixed shrub and tree groups;
subdued use of coloured flowers; spaces defined by curved beds of mass
shrub planting; subtle use of plant textures and form to create
aesthetic effects; and, use of natural stone for paving and walls with
absence of man made modern elements (Criterion D.2). The Garden is
important for exhibiting artistic excellence by the following: the
reliance on leaf and trunk colour and texture and plant form for
distinctive scenery composition; the contribution of the natural design
with curving lines, flowing lawns and scalloped shrubberies to the
garden aesthetic; and, the linking between the driveway, the main garden
and the Parkland (Criterion F.1). The Garden is important for exhibiting
a richness of garden cultural features as follows: a long winding richly
planted driveway; use of natural rock outcrops; stone paving; dry stone
walls and restrained flower colours (Criterion A.3). (RNE, 005698)
Description
Built in 1912. The garden was designed by Edna Walling and constructed by Ellis Stones.The 11-1/4 acre property contains a cottage; domestic garden; an outer garden; and a 7 acre grazing paddock. (Tansley, 1978)
