Statement of Significance

The Bump Tunnel is of State significance as the largest tunnel of its kind in Victoria, representing a substantial engineering achievement. It provided the crucial link between the Powelltown mill and La Trobe River Valley. (Supple 1991)

Description

The saddle which is called 'The Bump' divides the Little Yarra valley from the Latrobe River valley. A 313m long, timber-lined tunnel, about 2.8m wide and 4.0m high with a centrally located vent shaft. Build in 1925 to take timber loads through, rather than over this obstacle. Tunnel entrances are still visible but closed. On the surface are several cave-ins created when the tunnel was deliberately collapsed to seal it for 'safety reasons'. (Supple 1991)
