Statement of Significance

The Lookout as it stands today, although modified, is the only surviving

example of such structures in the Dandenongs. It is an important part of

the Shire's history and a significant local landmark. (Kueffer 1998) The

National Trust is undertaking further investigation of this place after

which the level of significance should be reviewed.

Description

The Belmont Lookout Tower in Upwey is a timber structure, with two platform levels, located at the highest point in Upwey.

It is said to be the last of many such structures which were built throughout the Dandenongs since the turn of the century. It has provided a vantage point for visitors to enjoy the panoramic vistas, and also for fire spotting (probably one of the main reasons for the purchase by Council). The Lookout still provides extensive views, however, public access is currently prohibited as the Tower is considered unsafe due both to its disrepair and to its failure to comply with current building safety regulations.
