Details
Fishing vessel, part of fleet fishing off Torquay when big ocean swell came up. Fleet made for Heads. All but Winifred managed to negotiate the Rip. With seas too heavy to enter, vessel anchored about 3 miles SW of Point Nepean. Alex and Keith Hoppen (uncle and nephew) threw overboard the 2 tons iron ballast. Outside duty pilot steamer Akuna launched 18 ft rowing boat and took the two fishermen off Winifred to the safety of Akuna. Cost 300 pounds. [Ferrier`s dates are not precise.]
