The Tasmanian schooner Truganini attempted to seek shelter in Lady s Bay (Refuge Cove). In the darkness, the vessel ran onto rocks and began to break up. All on board reached safety.
After the loss of the schooner Truganini, the Port Phillip Gazette reported, "...we regret to announce the total wreck of the schooner Truganini, Capt. Griffiths, bound from this port to Hobart Town on Saturday night last in Lady's Bay. The captain, it seems, was compelled through stress of weather to bear up for Lady's Bay and in the darkness ran upon the rocks and the vessel immediately went to pieces. The crew and passengers reached the shore in safety. Captain Griffiths despatched some of the crew to Melbourne for assistance and provisions having lost all on board; the Seahorse fell in with the boat outside the heads and took the crew on board and towed the boat into Hobsons Bay (Port Phillip Gazette 3 December 1842).
The following was salvaged: 3 anchors; 2 chain cables and hawse pipes; 1 topsial chain tye and sheet; 2 bowsprit shrouds; 4 chainplates; 1 mainmast and aquantity of standing and running rigging; 1 lead cistern;1 cap and 1 cross tree; 1 log reel; some handspikes (see notice in Hobart Town Courier 24 Feb. 1843).
