Details
Town of Rosebud derived its name from the wreck location of this well-known coastal trader (just west of Durham Place). Wind blows and sand shifts buried remains. In 1976 sewerage excavations at about 4-1/2 metres revealed the keel of a fairly large vessel - but work continued and area back-filled. Site identified by an early inhabitant. Hobson owned two uninsured vessels (incl. Rosebud ), both lost, thus ending his project. Register closed 31 Dec. 1876, endorsed with 'Cert of Registration lost'. Earlier voyages: London-Adelaide, London-Genoa, Adelaide-Melbourne, Western Australian ports to Melbourne, Port Fairy, Port Albert. In Dec. 1854, delivered posts from Western Port to Queenscliff and Geelong for Electric Telegraph Line. Scheduled to go on to Melbourne - no record of arrival or of later voyages until lost in June 1855. Press reports of loss state vessel was a lime trader but no other evidence found to support this. Lime vessels were usually smaller (about 30-40 tons). However Nancy , a lime trader went ashore at the same time but apparently got off. Rosebud had a number of previous owners in London and Melbourne. Hermaphrodite-rigged.
