Details
The KARINGAL was a former Sydney Ferry that had been purchased by Melbourne interests from the Maritime Service Board of New South Wales. On its delivery voyage the ferry, which had been registered as a pleasure craft, got into difficulty off Cape Conran. The vessel's planks began to open and water entered to such an extent that the pumps could not cope. On the morning of June 14 1985 the crew sent out a distress call which was picked up by nearby oil rigs. The crew abandoned the vessel and were picked up shortly afterwards by helicopter. The vessel sank at 10.05 in 40-50 metres of water.
