The ketch Kermandie was employed transporting granite from Cape Woolamai
for use in buildings in Melbourne. On its last voyage, a gale swept
through Bass Strait and the vessel disappeared without trace.
"Fears are entertained for the safety of the ketch KERMANDIE which
left Western Port last Saturday afternoon bound for Melbourne laden with
granite from Cape Woolamai. No tidings of her have been reported along
the coast and it is expected she foundered during the severe gale of
Saturday night. She has a crew of 3 hands, one a married man whose wife
and children are in Sydney." 'An extensive search by the government
steamer LADY LOCH along Wilsons Promontory, Yanakie Beach and the
Glennies failed to locate any sign of the ship or its crew. The
KERMANDIE was on one of its regular voyages from the quarry operated by
Chambers and Clutten on the north side of Cape Woolamai to Melbourne.
Stone was used in the facing of a building in Collins Street."
