The schooner Eliza arrived at Port Fairy with a cargo of timber from Tasmania and made fast to the government mooring. A gale from the south east caused the vessel to break free, and it was driven onto the beach. As the waves swept the deck, the crew sought shelter in the rigging until rescued by Captain Mills, the Harbour Master.
