In loving memory of L/Sgt. Joseph Solomon 2/7 Aust. Inf. Bn. 6 Div. A.I.F. Killed in action Bardia 4th. January 1941.

Description & History

Joseph Solomon was born in Hobart on 29 August 1914. He was a single man, a grocer's assistant in Dandenong, when he enlisted on 28 October 1939, naming his widowed mother, Eliza Jane of Newbury (near Trentham), as his next-of-kin. After initial training, he embarked for the Middle East on 15 April 1940 and by the end of the year he was with 2/7 Battalion. He was killed in action at Bardia, Libya on 4 January 1941 and buried at the Sollum War Cemetery, Egypt.

The memorial window was designed by William Wheildon and the full scale cartoon was drawn up by George H. Dancey for stained glass makers, Brooks, Robinson & Co. The order for a window 54 x 27 inches (approx.) was placed with the firm in August 1947, by the Reverend GT Morphel. The subject of the Roman soldier on guard at the fall of Pompeii was a popular image for war memorials and this version was taken from a painting of the same name, Faithful Unto Death (1865) by Sir Edward J Poynter RA. The figure panel was set into a diamond quarry leadlight, in the centre of a three-light window in the north wall of St. George's Anglican Church, Trentham (Vic.).
