Description & History

On Sunday 15 December 1946, the Mayor of Williamstown unveiled an Honour Board containing 169 names of men and women who served with the forces, and the Reverend Raverty dedicated three stained glass windows as a memorial to the men from the club who lost their lives: R. O'Neill, W.E. Smith, D.K. Forbes, N. Watson, D. Hall, L. Gray, A.L. Currie, J. Haining, N. James and [-] Levey. Not all men listed at the Williamstown Life-Saving Club have been identified.

Williamstown born James Arthur Haining joined the Royal Australian Navy in January 1932 and rose to be Petty Officer in 1938. After serving in several ships, he was on HMAS Canberra in the Solomon Islands when killed in action on 9 August 1942. Flight Sergeant Nigel Watson, born in Williamstown on 6 February 1915, was accidentally killed at Amberley (Q.) a few days after his 26th birthday on 12 February 1941. Flight Sergeant Alan Livingston[e] Currie, born Williamstown on 20 September 1923 and lost his life in an accident while with 27 Operational Training in U.K. on 6 September 1944.
