Description & History

Two windows in the south aisle of the Wesley Church were dedicated as Rolls of Honour to the men from the congregation who enlisted in the First World War; they were unveiled at a special service in January 1918. The usual pattern for any church was to create one single memorial but the large numbers who joined up from the Central Mission required two windows in order to express each name in a size that could be easily read by the congregation.

The second of the two windows incorporated the names of 60 servicemen and two nurses, inscribed separately at the end of the list, and at least another nine who died while on active service (several names are unreadable). The symbols were the same inboth windows - crown, crossed Australian and British flags and a laurel wreath - their message reinforced by the text and inscription - 'For King & Country' 'In Faithful Service'.

The names on the second windows: Marshall. T.; May, W.E.; Meade, M.; Mitchell, F.C.; Morley, Jas.; Morley, John; Moy Ling, B. +; Muir, L.C.J. +; Murray, A.J.; Mylrea, E.A.; McCallum, E.?; McCallum, C.A.; McLaren, S.R.; McLean, A.E.; McMurtries, H.; Nankervis, R.J.; Ogier, S.E.; Painter, W.; Paterson, W.; Payne, L.M.; Pearson, E.; Pinner, W.I.?; Porter, J.E.; Powell, ?; (eight names unreadable); Sibly, O.; Sibly, J.; Sibly ? +; Simmons, H.A. +; Slater, H.; Smith, S.H.; Smith, R.E.S.?; Stansall, C.W.; Stone, F.; Stone, N.; Taylor, A.L.; Thompson, Geo. +; Trembath, H.E. +; Trickey, L.W.; Turner, C.W.; Uhd, Robert; Viccars, L.; Warden, W.A.; Wasley, A.H.; Watson, E.N.; Watts, W.; Wellwood, R. +; Wilkinson, A.S.; Williams, G.H. +; Williams, C.S.; Winter, C.W.; Winstanley, T.W.; Wilson, E.R. +; Nurses: Alice R.
