Description & History

Two windows in the south aisle of the Wesley Church were dedicated as Rolls of Honour to the men from the congregation who enlisted in the First World War; they were unveiled at a special service in January 1918. The usual pattern for any church was to create one single memorial but the large numbers who joined up from the Central Mission required two windows in order to express each name in a size that could be read by the congregation.

The first of the pair listed 64 names - from Anderson to Mackwell - and a cross was inserted against the names of nine men who died while on active service. The symbols - a crown above the crossed flags of Australia and Britain and a laurel wreath - were intended to convey the solidarity of the Empire in the face of sacrifice and victory over death, the same symbols seen regularly on Brooks, Robinson & Co. commemorative windows and opus sectile honour boards. The names on the first window: Anderson, E.L.; Anderson, E.T.; Appleby, G.? E,; Barkell, W.J.' Barrie, D.W.; Bartle, T. +; Bazine, R.C.+; Biggs, E.J.V.; Blair, J.C.; Bowman, G.; Boyle, P.J.; Bradley, C.+; Briant, R.W.V.; Bridges, V.D.; Briggs, V.E.; Briggs, L.C.; Bunn, H.; Chaston, C.C.; Clencie, T.; Codling, W.; Cole, L.J.; Cook, F.G.; Davis, B.S.; Dobson, W. +; Dunstan, M.P.; Duross, J.V.; Ellis, W.C. +; Elsbury, E.E. +; Fielding, M.J.; Findlay, J.S.; Findlay, G.F.; Fillingham, A.; Foster, G.R.; Gardner, G.H.F.; Gorwell, F.; Gronn, H.; Groves, K.J. +; Groves, R.W.; Gyngell, F.H.; Hall, G.M.; Hateley, E.J.; Hearny, R.?; Heyes, T.H.E.; Heyes, M.F.B.; Hewett, C.J.; Holden, G.; Hollins, L.H.; Homes, R.S.; Honeybone, C.; Howie, R.H.; Humphreys, W. +; Huntley, F.W. +; Inglis, H.J.; James, L.M. +; Jones, W.L.; Kennedy, A.J.; Knight, H.H.L.; Knight, R.C.C.; Livesey, J.; Lloyd, J.; Lowe, J.M.; Mackwell, A.J.
