Sacred to the memory of Flying Officer Henry Hume Turnbull and the members of the crew of the RAAF Sunderland aircraft, who gave their lives off the coast of Norway on 1st Oct 1944 "Greater Love Hath No Man"

Description & History

Dr. Hume Turnbull, father of Flying Officer Turnbull, placed an order for a commemorative window with Brooks, Robinson & Co. in 1953. The window measured approximately 93 x 28 inches and as well as depicting the Ascension of Christ, it featured a scene of a Sunderland bomber flying over the Norwegian coastline and fiords and the Air Force insignia. Unfortunately the window is no longer illuminated by natural lighthowever itremains accessible in a wall-mounted light box.

Flying Officer Henry Hume Turnbull enlisted on 25 April 1942 and received his initial training at Somers, then Wagga Wagga (NSW) before proceeding to Canada for further training as a navigator under the British Empire Training Scheme. He was posted to 419 Squadron and was Mentioned in Dispatches early in 1945. He was a member of Flying Officer Marsh Godsall's crew in Sunderland aircraft ML735 that was attacked by three enemy aircraft and crashed into the sea of Bergen, Norway on 1 October 1944. He was 21 years old.
