Description & History
Few stained glass soldier memorials are to be found in Catholic churches and this is possibly the most significant and largest example to be seen in Victoria. The window was placed in St. Mary's Star of the Sea by the family and friends of Lieutenant Chris Fogarty and occupied the five lights of the south transept with the Ascension of Christ in the three central main lights, flanked by images of St. John and St. Mary. The lower panels were filled with the scene of the Holy Spirit Descending at Pentecost and the image of Christ in Glory filled the main tracery oculus. Chris Fogarty's late father, Mr. Thomas Fogarty, was twice Mayor of North Melbourne. His brother, medical officer Major Joseph P. Fogarty MC, OBE, survived the war.
Lieutenant Andrew Christopher Fogarty, was born on 28 January 1885, fourth son to Thomas and Cecilia Fogarty. Chris was educated at St. Patrick's College, Ballarat before studying medicine for two years, at Ormond College, University of Melbourne. His file papers listed his civilian occupation as 'grazier' when he enlisted on 26 February 1915. Some time after his enlistment he married Mary Agnes Fogarty. He joined 24 Battalion, sailing for the Middle East and Gallipoli on HMAT Euripides with 6th Brigade on 8 May 1915 after only two weeks at Broadmeadows camp and a month at Officer Training School. On 22 May he was commissioned 2 Lieutenant and full Lieutenant on 26 August 1916; he was killed in action 29 November 1915. He was buried in Browns Dip Cemetery near Anzac Cove and then reinterred at Lone Pine Cemetery in 1923.
