Description & History

In January 1919, the Vicar of St. Mark's, the Reverend T Quinton, reported that the new chancel and renovations to the church were progressing and that subscriptions were already flowing in for the planned soldiers' memorial. The Archbishop of Melbourne granted a Faculty in April the same year and it wasexpected that the church wouldreopen and the memorial window would be unveiled on Easter Day. The window's subject was descibed as a 'life-sized soldier, clad in armour', with names of the men inscribed on the window, which cost £50. The Knight was placed against a diamond quarry background with the laurel wreath and Crown of Life in the arch of the window. The names below were in four segments: the two upper panels with the names of volunteers from the parish and those men who made the 'supreme sacrifice' in the two lower sections.
