Description & History

The David and Jonathan windows were both made by EL Yencken & Co. from designs prepared by the firm's senior stained glass artist, William 'Jock' Frater. Just like the Biblical David and Jonathan, the window reflects the close bonds between the two young men in whose honour the window was erected. The two lights are among Frater's most successful Arts & Crafts windows, where he used a bold painterly style to depict the two young heroes. In the base panel of each light was a laurel wreath surrrounding the colour patch of the 11 Brigade Australian Field Artillery.

Edward Rowe was a 24 year-old accountant when he joined up on 8 May 1916. Initially in the 119 Howitzer Battery, he embarked on HMAT Aeneas in Melbourne on 2 October 1916, arriving at Plymouth the following month. He landed in France on 16 March 1917 and joined 4 Division Artillery soon after before transferring to 11 Field Artillery Brigade on 21 June 1917, the same day as his friend Edward Macgill. Gunner Rowe was killed in action in Belgium on 20 September 1917 and was buried near Ypres, at Menin Road South Military Cemetery.
