Description & History
A series of saints of the British church fill the windows of the clerestory of St. John's Cathedral. Inscriptions would have been impossible to read on the windows themselves, and therefore small plaques were attached to the pillars next to the aisles below. Brooks, Robinson & Co. was responsible for designing and making these windows, although the last of them may have been completed by Phoenix Glass, the firm set up by former Brooks employees, Joseph Stansfield and Jim Lynch after the old firm closed.
Egbert Somers Perry, known as Bert, was a 22 year old farmer from Tallangatta when he enlisted on 26 February 1916. He left Melbourne with reinforcements for 37 Battalion on 3 June 1916, arriving in Plymouth about five weeks later. On 22 November he proceeded to France and two months later he was in hospital suffering from mumps, along with many other soldiers at the front. He was promoted to Corporal permanently on 5 May 1917 but was killed in action, probably on 8 June 1917. There is no record of his burial and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
