To the Glory of God, and in memory of Pilot Officer Rhys Jones who gave his life of May 20th, 1944, in the cause of righteousness. Presented by his loving parents and family.
Description & History
Brooks, Robinson & Co. received an order for a commemorative window from Mrs. LB Jones in August 1947. The window was in two sections with the arch at the top measuring approximately 21 x 28 inches and the main panel below, 43 x 29 inches; the subject was adapted from an earlier cartoon that was made up for a window in the Presbyterian Church at Tatura. The Air Force badge was placed in the arch and a Cross and Wreath located behind the figure of the airman. The human face of war was an acceptable inclusion, however it was not a simple representation of an airman but the face of the young Rhys Webb Jones that was painted onto glass from a photo supplied by Mrs. Jones.
Rhys Webb Jones was the son of Lloyd Britton and Rachel Jones of Yarram and the husband of Jessie Nimmo Tulloch Jones, 18 Dryden Gardens, Edinburgh, Scotland. The Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour listed Pilot Officer Jones as a member of Bomber Squadron 115, however he was flying as observer (navigator) in Lancaster HK547 with 75 Squadron when he was killed in action over Le Mans, France on 20 May 1944. His will, made in favour of his wife, was dated 16 May 1944, only a few days before his death. He was buried at Le Mans West Cemetery, France.
