It was not until the eve of the Second World War that the family of Staff Captain Hopkins erected this window in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bacchus Marsh. Hopkins was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles William Hopkins, Stationmaster of Hamilton. His mother was the former Julia Mahoney of Bacchus Marsh. As was often the practice of the designers and makers of the St. George window, Mathieson & Gibson, they signed the window in the right hand margin.
In 1915, Clive Boyer Hopkins served as a Lieutenant with 13 Battalion at Gallipoli, where he was wounded and also mentioned in despatches. In France the following year, he was with 14 Brigade Light Trench Mortar Battery and took part in the ill-fated Battle of Fromelles when he was killed in action on 20 July. He was buried in Rue du Bois Cemetery near Armentieres, after a service conducted by the Rev. GWB Statt.
