Description & History

In 1924, a new Methodist church was built at East Laen in the Donald district, at a cost of £1000. Itreplaced the old church that had stood for 43 years. On Sunday 16 November the opening morning service was conducted by the Rev. DJ Flockhart and during the afternoon the Rev. JW Crean unveiled a stained glass window, presented to the church by the family of Mr. and Mrs. CR Basset, in memory of their brother Maurice, who was killed at Ypres in 1917. Brooks, Robinson & Co. received an order from BM Basset in October 1924 for a window in three lights. The central light measured approximately 77 x 17 inches and the two flanking lights 66 x 17 inches. The subject of St. George was depicted with head bowed and poised to slay the dragon beneath his feet. The emblems in the side windows represented Victory over Death and Peace. The window was ordered from Brooks, Robinson & Co. by BM Basset, in October 1924, which suggests that the firm moved very smartly to complete the job in time for the unveiling. The church stood on the site until 1960 when it was moved to Gell Street, Bacchus Marsh and then to its present site as a hall for St. Andrew's Uniting Church, Bacchus Marsh.

Maurice Walker Basset, a farmer of Laen in the Wimmera district, enlisted on 2 September 1915, aged 27. He embarked on HMAT Persic at Melbourne on 22 November 1915. He served with a number of Field Artillery Brigades and was with 5th Field Artillery when he was killed in action on 9 August 1917. He was buried in Belgium at Dickebusch New Military Extension. Relatives visited the grave in 1921 and placed a plaque and flowers, a mostunusual event in the first years after the war.
