To the Glory of God is in memory of their grandparents, James and Susan, among the founders of this church, their parents Herbert Thomas and Jemima Miriam and their brother John Thornton died on active service 12.8.1915. Presented by the Edwards family 16.9.1964
Description & History
Hungarian-born artist Bela Kozak established AB Stained Glass Studio in the 1950s after a short time employed by Brooks, Robinson & Co. As seen by the inscription, the window was erected as a memorial to three generations of the Edwards family who were among the founders of the Anglican church in St. Arnaud. One of the third generation, John Thornton Edwards, eldest son of Herbert Thomas and Jemima Miriam Edwards, nee Hearn, died while serving in the First World War.
John Thornton Edwards had three years' experience in the Citizen Military Forces as a Corporal before he enlisted with his parents' consent on 21 July 1915, as he was under age. He proceeded to Seymour Depot where he commenced training with 3 Battalion Australian Light Horse. He had only been in training a month when he returned home with a mate, Private Peters, not feeling well. His condition quickly deteriorated and he was diagnosed with cerebro-spinal meningitis and died on 11 August 1915; he was buried in the St. Arnaud Cemetery after a service conducted by the Reverend JW Davison. Private Peters contracted the disease and four others at the Camp were reported as displaying 'suspicious symptoms', causing the authorities to take steps to prevent a further outbreak.
