In loving memory of John McAllister Vincent Organist Killed in action Crete 24th May 1941 Aged 24
Description & History
The window was ordered from Brooks, Robinson & Co.by the Reverend R Clarke on 24 March 1952 and a new cartoon made for a window that measured 103 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches.
Corporal Vincent, born in Brunswick on 4 September 1916, was on the staff of the Registrar's Office at the University of Melbourne at the time of his enlistment and was pianist to the Meistersingers Male Choir as well as organist at Christ Church, Brunswick. He served with Australian Army Medical Corps 2/1 Field Ambulance attached to the 2/2 Field Regiment that took part on the defence of Crete. Following the landing of more than 9,500 German troops on the island on 20 May 1941, Corporal Vincent was initially reported missing, however it was found that he was killed in action on 24 May 1941 in the desperate and unsuccessful defence of Crete. In his honour, the Meistersingers presented a short service in tribute at the YMCA Melbourne in June; he is remembered on the Athens Memorial, Greece.
