The second Chapel at Ballarat Grammar School was formerly a church at Allendale, which the school bought in 1919 to replace the first chapel, now too small for the growing school community. It was opened for worship by Bishop Maxwell-Gumbleton of Ballarat on 11 February 1920. The Adelaide Mail reported that Joy and Robert Hare, the children of Captain Ivan Hare, MC, would attend the dedication of a memorial window to their late father in Ballarat Grammar School chapel on 17 March 1951. Ivan Hare distinguished himself at Ballarat Grammar and was the school's Scout Troop Leader. Later, he taught at St. Peter's College, Adelaide 1929 to 1940.
The image of the Faithful Knight was complemented by texts that filled ribbons around the symbols: the Cross, crown and laurel wreath at the head of the arch and the sword and torch at either side of the figure. The badge of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces above the inscription and the crest of Ballarat Grammar School with its appropriate motto, 'Serva Fidem' ('Keep the Faith') completed the design by Melbourne stained glass firm, Mathieson & Gibson.
Arthur Ivan Hare was 32 when he enlisted in Adelaide on 15 July 1940. He was posted to the 2/43 Battalion Infantry, and soon made Captain. He had a good understanding of military tactics, and showed initiative, courage and leadership in action in Egypt. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions while in charge of his company under enemy fire in the attack on Huin Ridge and Pt. 33 on 17 July 1942. Of particular mention was his return to the seat of the attack to rescue one man missing from his company who had been wounded in the ankle. He was killed in action on 1 November 1942 and was buried at El Alamein Cemetery.
