Description & History

A series of six windows was unveiled in the Hamilton Baptist Church in August 1933, all of which were installed to commemorate men who died in the Great War, one of whom was Joseph Brokenshire. Joseph Brokenshire was a 20 year-old tailor when he enlisted on 25 January 1916 and by the 11 May was disembarking in Suez from HMAT Suffolk. After training he was allocated to 57 Battalion and left for Marseilles, reaching that port on 30 June 1916. In July he joined 58 Battalion, part of desperately needed reinforcements after the Battle of Fromelles and he was made Corporal a month later. Fighting in France and then Belgium, General Birdwood expressed his appreciation of 'the gallant services rendered' by Corporal Brokenshire that was posted in January 1918, only two months before he was killed in action on 27 March 1918. He was buried at St. Pol British Cemetery, St. Pol-sur-Ternoise, France.
