The Victoria Bond Store which was constructed in 1887 originally ran from Lonsdale Street to Little Bourke Street and was the first building in Australia to have a wrought iron structural frame. It was designed by George Jobbins. Only the rear walls remain and are significant as a backdrop to Merritt's Place and consolidate the warehouse character of the corner of Lonsdale and King Streets. George Jobbins was the architect for this 5 storey brick warehouse which was built by J. Moore in 1887. The front elevation to Lonsdale Street is undistinguished but the side and rear elevations to Merrits Lane and Little Bourke Street respectively are good examples of functional simple brick detailing for warehouses. The Geelong Customs House was built in 1856 by Melbourne contractor W G Cornish, replacing earlier structures of 1838 and 1845 on the Customs Reserve. The design of this colonial georgian style three storey structure can be attributed to colonial architect James Balmain assisted by Edward Davidson, Clerk of Works.
