The stone lock-up at Bannockburn was originally constructed by Thomas Brooking and Co of Geelong and located at Lethbridge. The rectangular plan gaol of square coursed basalt with gabled entry porch and iron grille gate was completed in June 1860. In December 1869 Trevena and Gubby contracted to remove the stone lock-up from Lethbridge to Bannockburn, each stone being numbered. Lock-up, Police Station, Smythesdale, is a bluestone, single storied structure erected in 1869 to the designs of the Public Works Department of Victoria. The rectangular building has a projecting gabled wing with an iron grill door. There are barred, slit windows under the eaves. Walls are in coursed rustication on plinth and arris' distinguish the openings and corners. Roofs are gabled and clad in slate. The log lock-up at Omeo was erected c. 1863 under the supervision of the Public Works Department. It is constructed of roughly squared hardwood logs stacked 12 high horizontally and notched at the corners. The roof was clad in shingles and an iron bar grille door and slit windows are the only openings. The ceiling is formed of logs and the interior is lined with blackwood logs. AHC Statement of Significance The log lock-up, High Street, was erected c. 1855 and was originally located within the police station precinct. It is constructed of rough hewn logs, each approximately 30cm. diameter, stacked 14 high and crossed at the corners. The roof was originally clad in timber shingles. The complex of former Police buildings at Chiltern was erected in 1873 by the Public Works Department and consist of police quarters, stables and a lock-up. Built 1857 by Public Works Department, a simple 2 cell rectangular building built of sandstone. This masonry is unusual in being finished to a fair face and then picked over to give an unusual if crude effect. It is also unusual in that the interior is lined in timber - heavy sawn planks for walls and floors and logs for the ceiling. It is the oldest stone lock-up that we have dates for.
